Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I BECOME A GEO-SEAL CERTIFIED APPLICATOR?

Contact Land Science Technologies to discuss your ability to become a Geo-Seal certified applicator. Once approved, you will be required to undergo the applicator training program.

CAN SAND BE PLACED OVER THE GEO-SEAL MEMBRANE FOR PROTECTION?

Yes, sand can be placed over the membrane for protection, though placing sand over the membrane is not advisable according to the American Concrete Institute.

DO I NEED TO USE A THIN MIL PLASTIC WATER VAPOR BARRIER AND GEO-SEAL?

No, Geo-Seal will replace the thin mil water vapor barrier.

CAN IT BE APPLIED IN COLD TEMPERATURES?

Yes, Geo-Seal can be installed without the use of tents and artificial heat when the ambient air is 25°F and above. Contact Land Science Technologies for a cold weather contractor in your area.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE GEO-SEAL?

Geo-Seal is sold manufacturer direct to certified Geo-Seal installers. To obtain a quote, contact Land Science for an applicator in your area.

IF I HAVE AN EXISTING BUILDING, CAN I USE GEO-SEAL?

Yes, Geo-Seal can be used in retrofit applications. However, it should be noted that retrofit applications are reviewed on a project by project basis to understand the project complexity and desired outcome. Contact Land Science Technologies to learn if Geo-Seal will meet the project goals.

HOW IS QUALITY ASSURANCE MAINTAINED?

Land Science Technologies has developed an applicator certification and training program as a way of properly maintaining installation standards. In addition, free inspector training has been developed to provide proper guidance on how to thoroughly inspect Geo-Seal.

However it is important to note that the first line of quality assurance can be found in the redundancy built into the Geo-Seal system through the use of 3 functional layers to protect the building. Quality control procedures include the collection of coupon samples to ensure the specified mil thickness of Geo-Seal CORE has been applied and the use of a smoke test to ensure the membrane is free of voids and vapor tight.

IS THE GEO-SEAL SYSTEM CREATED ON SITE?

Yes, all three of the Geo-Seal components are shipped to and installed on site. The final assembly of the membrane on site ensures tight seals around penetrations and to terminations.

CAN GEO-SEAL PROTECT AGAINST SURFACE WATER AND/OR HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE?

Yes, Geo-Seal may also be used as a waterproofing membrane. Installation details will depend on the construction methods utilized and if the building foundation will be subjected to hydrostatic pressure. Contact Land Science Technologies for site specific recommendations.

WHY WAS GEO-SEAL CREATED?

Geo-Seal was created in response to an industry need for an easily installed vapor intrusion barrier specifically designed to protect structures against aggressive chemicals, such as, PCE, TCE, and Benzene. Previously, unprotected asphalt latex membrane was considered adequate for such aggressive chemicals, but due to the propensity of VOCs to absorb into and breakdown unprotected asphalt latex over time, a new more appropriate solution is needed. Geo-Seal represents a major advancement in vapor intrusion barriers.

Geo-Seal is also a great solution against relatively inert gases like methane.

WHAT IS GEO-SEAL®?

Geo-Seal is a composite vapor intrusion barrier system designed to prevent vapor intrusion into newly constructed buildings. The Geo-Seal vapor intrusion barrier is comprised of three layers:

  1. Geo-Seal BASE – High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) thermally bonded to a geotextile
  2. Geo-Seal CORE – 60 mil spray applied copolymer modified asphalt
  3. Geo-Seal BOND – HDPE thermally bonded to a geotextile

Incorporating chemically resistant HDPE along with a 60 mil spray applied asphalt latex membrane, produces a membrane that is both chemically resistant and easily constructible.
